Labor and Delivery Playlist

Music is my language. While preparing for my labor and delivery, I decided to compile a list of songs into a playlist to help me 1) relax, 2) stay focused on Jesus, and 3) calm my fears. I listened to these songs for several weeks leading up to my labor and was encouraged every time I opened my heart to the lyrics. I definitely recommend having songs on hand during the birthing process. Though I only labored for a little over two hours at home before rushing to the hospital (read the crazy story here!), I was able to listen to a few of these songs on my playlist before we left. When a contraction hit and my response was to tense up and fear the pain, these songs helped keep me calm and steady. Hearing truths in the lyrics of these songs (i.e. be still and know that He is God....faithful God, every need You've met....my Father comforts me....He walks with me where angels fear to tread...) brought comfort to me and reminded my heart that I am His child and I am in His hands.

Below is my playlist. It's a combination of fast and slow songs. Some instrumentals. Most all of these can be found on iTunes.

Supplements and Vitamins I Took While Pregnant

I am not a doctor, midwife, herbalist, or anything of the like.
The information in this post is just that - information.
This is simply what I have learned and what I tried in my pregnancy.
Do your own research before you take any supplements or herbs.

Contrary to my first pregnancy, I took a lot of vitamins while pregnant the second time around. In my first pregnancy, I wasn't consistent in taking my prenatals (probably because I was too consumed with trying to find a way to combat the acne I suffered!). This time, however, I made a vow that I would be religious in taking whatever vitamins and herbal supplements I felt was necessary to make my pregnancy and, more importantly, my delivery as smooth and as healthy as possible. And I'm so glad I did!!

Prenatal Vitamins

For my prenatal, I simply took Spring Valley's Prenatal Multivitamin. Later, I also tried the Rainbow Light Prenatal Multivitamin tablets. Next time around, I plan on using Rainbow Light again.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for tissue repair, bone growth, healthy skin, and helps your body fight infection. It also helps the body absorb iron and, in pregnancy, it keeps the amniotic sack strong. It is suggested that pregnant women take at least 85 mg of vitamin C per day.

Calcium

Calcium is, of course, essential for bone health, but it also benefits the kidneys, blood pressure, and can even prevent certain type of cancers! When I was little, I developed an allergy to milk, so drinking milk has never been a part of my diet. I would enjoy a little ice cream here, and a few slices of cheese there, but I was always careful not to overdo. As I grew up, I learned how to handle milk products more and more but I never could develop a taste for straight milk. So suffice it to say, Calcium is very important for me to take. In this pregnancy, I found myself craving ice cream, cheese, yogurt, and chocolate milk often and my husband was always intentional in reminding me that I needed as much calcium as possible. I took Calcium supplements every day and allowed myself to indulge (not gorge!) in whatever "calcium cravings" I acquired.

Evening Primrose Oil

Once I hit the 37 week mark and was considered full term, I began taking Evening Primrose Oil. Many midwives and dulas suggest taking Evening Primrose Oil to help prepare the cervix for labor. Some take it before they are full term, but I tend toward the cautious side because the oil has been proven to induce labor in some women. So I began taking one, sometimes two, 500 mg pills a day, beginning at 37 weeks. It took only a little over one week for my cervix to be completely ripe and ready.

Red Raspberry

I honestly think this was the most important thing I took. After clearing it with my OB/GYN, I began taking Red Raspberry supplements once I was full term. I chose Natures Way Raspberry Leaves and after reading that you can take up to 4500 mg of Red Raspberry a day, I began taking four a day and increased to six a day, taking two at breakfast, two at lunch, and two at bedtime. Red Raspberry has an abundant supply of calcium, iron, magnesium, and manganese. Some women use raspberry leaf for painful periods, morning sickness, preventing miscarriage, and easing labor. I had read numerous stories of women who had all-natural births that were easier than previous births and contributed it to red raspberry leaves. I also bought Raspberry Leaf Tea. I'm not a big tea drinker, but I enjoyed sipping this tea every day. What Red Raspberry does in pregnancy is prepare and strengthen the uterus for labor. With your uterus stronger, each contraction is able to achieve more. It also helps the uterus clamp down easier and deliver the placenta without much help (massaging, etc). Another benefit of Red Raspberry is that it aids in milk supply, eases postpartum pain, and contributes to the female system in its entirety. Does it sound like I'm a believer?? I am. This was my first all-natural birth and, though painful, it was unbelievably easier than my previous, MEDICATED birth.

Naturally, I give all credit and glory to the Lord for giving me a healthy pregnancy and bringing me through delivery. I'm not putting my trust in Red Raspberry or any other vitamin or herb I took, but I am very thankful for the things God has given us in nature that aid our health and help strengthen our bodies.

Birth Story of Selah Elizabeth

My darling girl made her appearance early this morning and my, what a story her birth is! While things are quiet and everything still fresh in my mind, I decided to write down and share the birth story of my little girl, Selah Elizabeth.

It started Monday night, February 11, 2013. In the space of a week and a half, I had been having Braxton Hix contractions which I thought, at the time, were the real thing. ***A note to future or first-time pregnant ladies - you will know when it's the real thing! With my first baby, my water broke so I had little to no idea what true contractions felt like. I thought I did ....but I did not. After several weeks of BH contractions and constant calls, texts, and emails from anxious friends and family, I felt frustrated with myself that I had had so many nights of false labor. With our families waiting excitedly, on Monday the 11th, I had decided that I was NOT going to breathe a word of a potential contraction until I was completely sure. Monday I spent cleaning our house, doing laundry, and going about my normal "Monday routine." As was normal in my pregnancy, I had a minor backache off and on all day.

Grant and I went to bed shortly before 10 p.m. My back had a dull ache which was typical, especially after a full day of chores and such. But there was something different this time. No matter what position I tried, I could not get comfortable. I felt restless and my backache slowly increased. At 10:12 p.m. I had my first contraction. I checked the clock and tried to get into a comfortable position to sleep. Ten minutes later, I felt another contraction. Unlike the previous BH, these contractions felt like intense cramps that wrapped around my back and stomach. With my back still aching, I quietly slipped out of bed and started pacing the living room, stretching to see if the achiness would go away. It didn't and I began to notice that those cramp-like feelings were coming every 10-15 minutes. I kept thinking, "Surely this isn't it. I've been wrong so many times. Am I missing something??" I logged into Facebook, hoping my mom was online. She was. :) I told her everything I was experiencing and she answered some questions and gave me tips on what to do and what to look for. My doctor had instructed me to head to the hospital when my contractions began to come 7-8 minutes apart. After an hour and a half of contractions every 10 minutes, I noticed that with each one, I felt pressure on my pelvis. Each one was lasting longer and I was beginning to moan through them. I knew it then. I was in labor. I woke Grant up at 12:12 a.m. and told him what had been going on for the last two hours. I said I was going to take a bath and then begin getting ready to go to the hospital. Twenty minutes later, my contractions dropped from 10 minutes apart, straight to 5 minutes apart and were getting more and more painful. I was confused. My husband, thankfully, was insistent. We needed to leave. Immediately. Barely able to walk to the car, I climbed in and we made our way to the hospital - an hour and fifteen minutes away.

In less than 20 minutes after leaving our home, I couldn't talk and could barely move due to the pain. The contractions, we discovered, were coming every TWO minutes. We were still far away. My husband, who became my hero all over again, put on the flashers and drove 90-100 mph on the freeway. Half way to the hospital, in a painful and terrified whisper, I told my husband that any hospital would do. My thoughts: just get me to a hospital!! I had hoped to try to deliver naturally this pregnancy. Having had a hard and long delivery with our first child, I wanted to try an all-natural birth this time around. To be honest, I am and always have been a weenie when it comes to pain. I don't have a high pain tolerance. I think in the back of my mind, I believed I couldn't deliver naturally because of that, even though I wanted to. In the car, flying down the interstate, all I could pray for was relief. I kept saying, "Please, just let us make it in time to get the epidural!"  After two more indescribable contractions, I felt my body clamp down and I felt the unmistakable urge to push.

PANIC MODE

We were still 30 minutes away from our hospital. I told my husband my body was trying to push. I knew we couldn't make it. The north side of town, where we were entering, had another hospital; a branch of "our" hospital. We had to go there. Amazingly, while driving at an incredible speed AND praying for me AND trying to comfort me in my pain, my husband was able to call our hospital and explain that we wouldn't be able to make it. He arranged for us to go to the other, closer hospital.

At this point, my contractions were coming constantly, with hardly a breaking point long enough to offer me a decent inhaling breath. With each contraction, I felt more pressure to push. Finally, we made it to the hospital. My husband, double parked with flashers on, leaped out of the car, grabbed a wheelchair, and lifted me out of my seat. He brought me to Labor & Delivery and the first thing I (loudly) said was, "Need....epidural!" My nurses, who were so calm and collected, helped me to a bed and, after checking me said, "Okay honey, you are at 10 cm. It's too late for an epidural, its time to push." ***insert a wailing "Nooooo!" from me***  All I remember after that is pushing and praying that she would come out healthy...and that I wouldn't die. (Dramatic, I know, but that's how it I roll while in childbirth). I don't remember how many pushes it took. Somewhere between five and ten. But finally, with a surge of strength from out of nowhere, Selah entered the world at 2:04 a.m. with a beautiful, strong cry, a head full of dark hair, and big blue eyes. It's amazing how aware and in awe of life you become when you hold your little one in your arms. She is a precious, petite princess who weighed 6 lbs, 7 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. For a little girl who's name means pause, rest & reflect, she sure entered the world exhibiting anything but! :) She was obviously in such a hurry to get here, the doctor couldn't make it in time! But now that she is here, and the delivery is over, she truly is living up to her name.

I didn't have a choice in terms of pain medication and a great part of me, though the pain was horrible, is glad I didn't. I learned a little more about the strength and power of Jesus Christ being made perfect in our weakness. I learned, from experience, what travail is. I learned a bit more about the amazing work of God's creation and how He designed our bodies. I even remember thinking, Oh God....this pain doesn't even match the pain of sin Jesus suffered on the cross. For me.

I thank you for your prayers. I am feeling tremendous and recovering excellently. In the morning we will go home and begin our lives as a family of FOUR! Please continue to lift us up as we enter a new chapter. May our faithful God receive all the glory. Forever.

The Pregnancy Files | Week 39 | baby #2

38 weeks

In these final days of my pregnancy, I am trying to soak up what has been "normal" since the birth of my first. Today I am 39 weeks and 2 days pregnant. According to my OB, baby girl could quite possibly make her appearance today or tomorrow! That's her prediction and I am quite happy with that opinion! So here are my thoughts and feelings about this pregnancy... for the last time. :)

  • My doctor estimates that baby girl will be about 6 lbs. Petite! :) Everything looks perfectly healthy and normal.

  • She has been head down for three weeks which is GREAT!!
Her room - all ready!!
As for me...
  • I am prepping for labor. I have posts in the making that will explain what I have been doing, what I have been taking, and how it has worked for me.

  • I haven't had any new stretch marks this pregnancy, but in these final weeks I have noticed that my former stretch marks have become even more difficult to see. This is good news. What have I been doing? Vitamin E oil and Lavender essential oil.

  • Not much swelling. My feet and ankles have swollen occasionally and my fingers are a little swollen, though not nearly as bad as last time. Epsom salt baths and ingesting apple cider vinegar (with the mother) helps!

  • Other than fruit, the only craving I have had in my third trimester has been granola bars.

  • I am dilating well. "The time" could be any moment!

Prepping for Baby!

Today I thought I would show you how the nursery is coming along! Earlier this week, my husband and I took down all of our Christmas decor and I did a massive cleaning job on our house. We also....... **drum roll** ......PUT HER BED TOGETHER!!! This is a personal victory of mine since I have been wanting to set up her bed for over a month now. Below are some "before and after" pictures of her bedroom. It isn't completely finished yet, but it is well on its way!

BEFORE:
The room was, first, our study/office.

AFTER:
The doorway

View from the door

View from her bed

A beautiful painting

Obviously, we don't have her bedding in yet and we haven't brought in the swing and infant bouncer from storage, but you can see how it is coming along. Only a few weeks left!!!

HURRY little bit!!!! I want to see you!!!

The Pregnancy Files | Week 34 | baby #2

32 1/2 weeks

Today I am 34 weeks preggo! --- I know I haven't been very diligent in taking pictures of my growing abdomen. I plan to take a new picture today. In a little while, I will head to my OB appointment where I will get an update on how my little one is doing. From what I can tell, she is...*ahem*....growing. And she seems to be very, very, very energetic. Here is the latest:

  • The average weight and length of a baby at this point is about 5 lbs and 18 inches. She may be smaller, she may be bigger, but she is somewhere along that line.

  • Her fingernails are completely formed and growing. Best make sure the fingernail clippers are within arm's reach.

  • She can recognize songs, voices, and various other sounds. How neat!

As for me...
  • I....can't....breathe. It takes focus to take a full, deep breath.

  • Sleep is becoming an adventure. At bedtime (no matter what time of night that may be), I either cannot get comfortable or she decides she wants to play in my rib cage or turn cartwheels. I'm in for quite a wild ride...

  • Itching. Itching. Itching. Thankfully, loading up on lotion and taking cool baths help. It isn't nearly as awful as my first. But who enjoys itching with little to no relief??? Not me.

  • No swelling....yet. I'm praying it never comes, honestly.

  • No leg cramps. No new stretch marks. No varicose veins. And no heartburn. That is goooood.

  • My appetite has been strange with this pregnancy. First it was nonexistent. Then it came back with a force. Now, it's like, "Eat? Eh....okay, I guess." I haven't had a craving in.... I don't remember when. Odd.

  • I am beginning to feel Braxton Hicks contractions. That's exciting.

That's all for now. I need to scoot off to my next appointment. I want to hear the heartbeat again!

The Pregnancy Files | Week 30 | baby #2

Here I am at 30 weeks! My Nathan was born at 39 weeks, so the knowledge of how close I am to little miss Selah's arrival is unreal! Here's what's happening with us!

  • She is about the size of a cucumber, roughly weighing around 3 lbs.

  • Her brain is growing daily AND she can regulate her own body's temperature.

  • She is strong enough to grasp a finger.

As for me...
  • After enduring the grueling three-hour glucose test, the results came back negative. No Gestational Diabetes for this momma!

  • I'm uncomfortable and easily tired. But honestly, that is completely understandable seeing how I have a little person growing in my abdomen and I'm chasing after a toddler every day.

  • Itching. Oh.no. With Nathan, I had SEVERE itching moments. I even remember breaking my skin at one point. Thankfully, I learned a little from then and have been loading up on the lotion!

  • I haven't had heartburn, which I contribute to not eating late at night and drinking Ionized water.
  • Unlike my first pregnancy, I haven't had one single leg cramp. This is awesome news. :)

This weekend, I am working in her room and planning for things to be done after Christmas is over. Please continue praying for me and for little Selah; that we will be healthy, strong, and that the Lord will be glorified every day.

It's a....GIRL!!

Yesterday my husband and I went to have our gender-reveal ultrasound and were shocked to find that our little one is....a....

GIRL!!

For some reason, we were both thinking "boy" so when my doctor said, "I do believe you have a little girl in there, Mrs. Lee," my heart momentarily stopped.

"A girl?? A baby girl? A little darling to love on, squeeze, and dress up?"

Oh yes. :)

Since that moment, I have thought about so much, but my thoughts go beyond ribbons, ruffled dresses, baby dolls, and the color pink. I've taken a good look around and I am well aware of the little girls around me. Sadly, most little girls these days are not....little. They are just mini-Marilyn Monroe's. Growing up, I played with dolls until I was twelve or thirteen. I didn't give much thought to boys at all until then. I wasn't preoccupied with my looks. I was a child, not a wanna-be-pin-up-girl. These days, little girls are carrying around iPhones, iPads, texting all the time, wearing loads of makeup, and dancing seductively to Britney Spears. I want the extreme opposite for my baby girl. My prayer for her - right now - is that she will not resemble Paris Hilton, Honey Booboo, Betty White, Hilary Clinton, or any other well-known "example" of girlhood and womanhood. I would rather her emulate Queen Easter, Ruth, Amy Carmichael, Sabina Wurmbrand, and Leslie Ludy. I would rather she have character and inner strength. I pray she will fall in love with Jesus at an early age and make Him the lover of her heart. I pray she will be servant-hearted and kind. I pray she will be pure, set-apart, and passionate for the truth. I want so much for her and, yes, I am aware that I have an enormous responsibility to TEACH her - by word and example - what a lady of the Lord should be. So please pray for me. And pray for her.

It's important for us to pray for our children - even before they are born. Especially given the horrifying statistics around us. We ought to pray for our sons to rise up and champion the cause of Christ, be protectors of purity and righteousness, and seek to be...well, MEN. Strong. Mighty. Noble. And likewise we ought to pray for our daughters to embrace their calling as women; to love the Lord; to be gentle, wise, kind, and beautiful on the inside more than on the outside. I encourage you to begin praying for your children today if you haven't already. They need it. The world needs it too.

So what did we decided to name our little sweetheart girl? I am thrilled to announce that her name will be:

Selah Elizabeth

The name Selah (pronounced "SAY-lah") means: Pause; Rest; Reflect on the goodness of the LORD.

Elizabeth, which is my middle name, means: Consecrated and vowed to God.

Please join us in prayer that she will rise up and fulfill her beautiful name.

Psalm 45:13
"The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold."

The Pregnancy Files | Week 20 | baby #2

Currently I am 20 weeks pregnant with baby #2! Halfway there! Tomorrow is our big gender reveal ultrasound! I haven't seen our baby since I was 8 weeks pregnant, which is quite different from my last pregnancy, so I am very excited and anxious to see how much he/she has grown. For now, here is the latest with baby and me.

  • Baby is about the size of a banana.
  • Baby weighs around 10.2 ounces and measures about 6.5 inches.
  • The taste buds are working.
  • He/She is able to gulp down several ounces of amniotic fluid each day!

I am more in awe all the time. As for me....

  • My nausea is gone.
  • I had an extreme bout with dizziness for several weeks, which was difficult, but now it's completely gone. Yay.
  • I am feeling lots of movement and tiny kicks and thumps. It's precious.
  • I have a bump...as you can see from the above picture. :)
  • My appetite has been interesting. I haven't had much of one, but I have been craving fruit like mad. I've stocked the house with strawberries, grapes, oranges, apples, bananas, kiwi, and grapefruit. Fruit popsicles ...fruit smoothies...fruit juices....fruit with my meals. But unlike my last pregnancy, I have eaten tiny amounts...hence the small appetite. I'm not concerned, tho. I'll gain it eventually.
  • My energy levels have gone up, but I can crash quick when I've done too much. But I'm thankful I have lots more energy than a few weeks ago.

Funny how each pregnancy is so different. Can't wait for tomorrow! What are your predictions? Will baby #2 be pink or blue?

The Pregnancy Files | Week 12 | Baby #2

I can't believe I am 12 weeks already! Here is the latest on baby #2:

  • Baby is about the size of a lime.
  • The tissues and organs in his/her body is growing and maturing. Baby is swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. His/her organs — including the kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver — are in place and starting to function. Reflexes are the newest development!
  • Tiny nails are formed on fingers and toes and peach-fuzz hair is growing!

Incredible, isn't it? As for me....

  • My nausea comes and goes, but it is significantly better.
  • I am more tired than I was three weeks ago. I do have days full of energy, but I can get exhausted very quickly.
  • I have a small bump. That's been hard for me because I didn't show at all until well after 14 weeks, but I have heard that you show quicker with each pregnancy. So, 'tis fine.

There's a little update on me and baby #2. I cannot wait to find out the gender! It won't be long now!

The Pregnancy Files | Week 7 | Baby #2

Today I enter my seventh week of pregnancy and.... I feel it. But more about me later. First, here what's up with baby #2:

  • Baby is currently the size of a blueberry; which is incredible because just a couple weeks ago, he/she was the size of a poppy seed. There has been some big-time growing!!
  • Baby's brain is growing fast, generating about 100 new cells every MINUTE! The arms and legs are emerging as joints begin to form. His or her kidneys are also in place! Is God big or what?!?
  • I haven't yet had my first doctor's appointment, but we will FINALLY hear our little one's heartbeat next Friday! I am more than anxious to see the little wiggle worm and watch life taking root in my body. It's truly amazing.

As for me:

  • I...am...nauseous. Big time. With Nathan, I was nauseated a little, but nothing like this. I've been living on Edy's Fruit Bars (thank you, Edy, whoever you are!) and Ginger Ale. The minute something sounds good enough to eat and I dig in...bad things happen. *sigh* Oh well. It's worth it. And I am more than thankful to have a sweet little boy with a helper's heart, and an amazing husband who goes above and beyond to take care of me.
  • I'm tired but, thankfully, not as exhausted as I was with Nathan. Of course, I believe that's because I can't stay in bed all day due to Nathan toddling around. :) And I must say, his little smile makes everything a little easier.

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing. And life is even MORE beautiful!

The Fruit of the Womb is His Reward

The Bible says that children are a heritage; a reward. I cannot begin to express how Grant and I feel to have been given the blessing of our son, Nathan. And now, I cannot tell you how we felt to discover that we were being "rewarded" a second time! That's right.... I'M EXPECTING!!!

Baby #2 should make his or her appearance sometime in mid-February of 2013.

My husband's and my reaction to this pregnancy was vastly different than with our first. With Nathan, we were overjoyed but very, very overwhelmed, not knowing what to expect. This time, we know full well what a blessing little Nathan is and are 100-times MORE thrilled and in awe; anxious to meet this little one and experience all the joys again.

Please be praying for me as I begin my pregnancy journey for a second time - for my health and little baby #2's health and safety.

God is big....and so very good!!

Psalm 127:3-5a
"Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them..."

Birth Story of Nathan James

I would like you all to meet my sweet son, Nathan James. Born yesterday evening, I am completely in love already with this precious little boy. I could sit and stare at him for hours and I don't want him out of my sight. Though I was up for over 36 hours, last night I didn't want to fall asleep. I just wanted to look at him. He is precious.

Many have asked about labor and how Nathan came so I will attempt to jot it down now.

Everything began Tuesday evening, April 12. My day was a normal one. I picked up the house and rested a lot throughout the day. At around 6 p.m. my water broke. At the time, however, I wasn't so sure. It wasn't like I had expected it to be. I called my Mom. I called my Doctor. Both said the same thing - "watch it closely for a while." So I did. Grant and I got ready and headed to a revival service in a nearby town. It was hard to concentrate throughout the singing and preaching and by the end of the service, I was pretty sure my water had, indeed, broken! So I called my Doctor again and explained everything I had experienced in the past two hours. I was told to come in for a check, but it sounded like I was beginning the labor process. So Grant and I grabbed our bags and headed to Little Rock.

Once we got to the hospital, I was checked and found out - to my surprise (even though I somewhat expected it) - that my water was broken and that I was dilated to 3 cm. Contractions started immediately and began coming at 3-6 minutes apart, each one not lasting very long. By then it was 10:30 p.m. and so we settled in for a long night.....and a long night it was! I was up all night in active labor with contractions, which soon began getting very intense and causing extreme pain in my lower back. For hours we tried different positions to relieve the pain, we tried a warm bath, hot towels, etc. Though it helped for a time, after a while the contractions were too intense. At 5 a.m. I was dilated to 5 cm and my back pains were almost unbearable. By 7 a.m. I decided that I needed an Epidural. I found out, later, that I would have had to have had one eventually anyway due to small complications. After I was given pain meds, my contractions were less intense and my back pain was gone, which gave me some time to rest a little.

It was estimated by the nurses that at the rate I was going, I would probably deliver around noon. This excited me! Unfortunately, though, I wouldn't.

By 10 a.m. I was dilated to 8 cm and Grant's and my family were there, anxiously waiting with us.

Then at 11:45 a.m. I was told that I dilated to 10 and should begin pushing. So push I did. Nathan's head was seen but he moved so slowly that, after a little while, I was told to sit up, allowing gravity to move him down more. We would push again later. At 12:30 p.m. I began pushing again and pushed for over an hour with little progress. Rinse and repeat.

By 2:30 I was getting tired and frustrated. I couldn't understand what was holding him up inside or why my pushing wasn't making that big of a difference. Just when I felt too tired to stay awake, I felt a surge of energy and adrenaline shoot through my body. I know, without a doubt, that someone was praying for me at that time. So we kept pushing and, funny as it sounds, we were able to laugh in between contractions. Though I was still frustrated and confused, I was still able to enjoy the process and laugh...even though it was painful and exhausting.

By 4 p.m. it was beginning to get very intense. We were approaching the 24 hour mark since my water had broken and Nathan needed to come out. The problem was that he was moving too slowly down the birth canal, and we couldn't figure out why. We tried to turn him, putting myself in as many positions we could think of. After exhausting nearly all our options, my doctor told me she would try one more thing to get him out. If it didn't work, I would need surgery. I remember the moment when she getting ready to use the last option on the list before a c-section became vital. I was scared, exhausted, and a part of me felt defeated. But right before she began, my husband called for prayer. My doctor, my amazing nurse who had spent all day by side, my mom, and myself all bowed our heads and he prayed for Nathan to come out healthy, whole, and naturally with no surgery needed. As a contraction began, I pushed with, literally, a supernatural strength....and he was born! After 23 hours of labor, I heard my son cry and I felt something well up inside me that I still can't explain. He was here! We found out that the umbilical chord had been wrapped around his neck, making his way out unbelievably slow. It explained why it took all day to move him down the birth canal. But, praise be to God, it was not wrapped tight and he was born in perfect condition!

I had some mild complications, but I am healing and doing well. I am just thankful that little Nathan is here! He is healthy, strong, and has the sweetest disposition. He was alert right away and is very laid back and mellow. Grant and I are completely in love with him!

I want to thank everyone who was in prayer for me during labor. It was very intense and there were moments when I didn't think I could do any more. There were moments when I didn't think I would make it. But I have come to a better understanding of God's strength. It IS made perfect in weakness. He is faithful and He truly does give good and perfect gifts!

Nathan lives up to his name - "gift of God." What a gift he is!

The Pregnancy 10 Commandments

So here I am, at 39 weeks! Who knows when the big day will be? All I know is that I'm ready, the nursery is complete, our bags are packed, and the time is near! It has been a quick 9 months, yet I feel like I have been pregnant for FOREVER! Strange...

In the past 9 months, I have learned many things. For any of you moms-to-be (or ladies hoping to get pregnant one day), I have jotted down what I call the "10 Commandments of Pregnancy" for your reading enjoyment.

1. Thou shalt not look at pictures of yourself pre-pregnancy. Ever. Why? It will make your self esteem plummet. Don't look at photos of yourself before pregnancy while you're sporting a baby bump. Just stare at your growing belly and remember that you have a life in there!

2. Thou shouldst enjoy the feeling of oneness with your baby. It's funny. It's weird. It's amazing. It's painful. Wrap it all up in a package and give it to yourself! It's a great thing.

3. Thou shalt not weigh thyself every day. It is detrimental to your sanity, I have discovered. According to my doctor, I have gained an appropriate amount of baby weight for my size, height, and age. Don't ask me how I feel, however. I just nod and say, "Good" when I'm told that I'm right on track.

4. Thou shalt drink water and eat healthy. Though I have had my share of cravings, as posted yesterday, I have endeavored to eat well throughout my pregnancy. Yes, I have enjoyed an occasional candy bar and a handful of cookies, but I have tried, when I feel like eating sugar, to grab a piece of fruit or, maybe, drink a small milkshake. And my goodness, down the WATER! Toss the sodas and only drink juice made with 100% fruit. Don't go crazy, but just do your best to stay healthy.

5. Love thy husband. No, he is not pregnant. No, he does not know or understand what's going on or how you feel. But love him anyway. Go easy on him. Deep down, he wishes he could understand (and of course, you do too!). So talk about the pregnancy, but don't get angry if he just doesn't get it. That's why God created YOU to grow and birth babies, not him.

6. Thou shalt not do heavy manual labor.
Nope. Take advantage of it too. No heavy lifting. No working from dawn to dusk without stopping. Take it easy. Ask for help. And enjoy being a princess for a while. It's okay to ask for an ice lemonade, some grapes and a fan!

7. Thou shalt keep a journal. I am sorry to say that, though I have journaled a lot, I haven't done as well of a job in this area as I wished I had. I am thankful that I have blogged and journaled many, many things in the last 9 months, but I wish I would have recorded more. So, take the advice and be sure you write everything down. Trust me, once "pregnancy brain" kicks in, you'll wish you had!

8. Thou shalt wear clothes that FIT. I don't know about you, but when ladies dress....well....completely unladylike, it is horrid. When they dress in clothes that are too tight, too revealing, and too "small," it is disgusting. It has amazed me at how some women actually want to take even more off when they become pregnant. Gross. Cover up. Be modest. When you go clothes shopping, find clothes that draw eyes to your face, honourably adorn your body, show off your adorable "bump" but, most of all, bring glory to the One who planted that little life inside you.

9. Thou shalt talk to your baby. Don't kid yourself....babies hear you. Studies have shown that babies begin to hear around 16 weeks. By the sixth month of your pregnancy, their hearing is acute and accurate and they can respond to noises, even recognize certain sounds! So talk to your baby. Pray for AND with him/her. We cannot see God, but He speaks to His children. Speak to yours.

10. Remember to smile. In the midst of the swelling and waddling and feeling completely clumsy and unattractive, you have a reason to smile. So do it. You'll feel better.

Pregnancy Cravings || pt 2

It has been 9 months. WOW! Lots learned. Many "new" experiences and frustrations, but I have to say that it has been somewhat of an easy pregnancy. Oh sure, I have had my share of headaches, swelling, mood swings, fatigue, discomfort, blah blah blah blah, but I have been enormously blessed with an uncomplicated pregnancy and a low amount of horrific-ness!

But let's not forget the ever-common and very interesting pregnancy experience - cravings! What have mine been? Let me share them..

  • My first weird pregnancy craving was back in October and it was the pinto beans and cheese from Taco Bell. I "needed" them so much that I ended up buying the Taco Bell brand pintos at the grocery store so I could have them any time I wanted at home.
  • For about a week, I ate jalapenos with everything. I've always enjoyed mexican and spicy foods, but jalapenos every day at nearly every meal? That's not normal, even for the spicy food lover. Breakfast? I'll have eggs, please.....with jalapenos on the side!
  • In November I craved bacon for a week or so. It could be due to the fact that we had just returned from Israel where a bacon cheese burger is non-existent....but considering the fact that I didn't go crazy with bacon after my first trip to the Holy Land, I think it's safe to say that this was, indeed, a pregnancy craving.
  • Red grapes. From August until now, I have put away my share of red grapes. I'm willing to bet that more than a quarter of my baby weight is red grapes alone.
  • For a month back in January I.....needed.....grapefruit. This disturbed Grant who hates grapefruit. I have loved it for a while, but in January?? I......HAD.....to have.....GRAPEFRUIT!
  • My recent and final craving has been milkshakes and/or ice cream. I actually have five different kinds of ice cream in this house as I type this. The good thing? There have been five different kinds for a while....meaning I haven't gorged myself, but have enjoyed it in moderation.
So there you have it! No "pickles and ice cream" for me. I have always hated pickles anyway. *gag* And, thankfully, my baby boy didn't care enough for them to send my body into a "I-must-have-pickles" phase. Whew! hehe.

The Pregnancy Files || pt 2

38 1/2 weeks down. Who knows how many days/weeks left. That's all up to baby Nathan....or, really, all up to the Lord. Being full term and extremely uncomfortable, I think you can guess how I'm praying.

Currently, Nathan is around 6 or 6 1/2 pounds and about 18-19 inches long. He is very active and makes my tummy roll quite often which is more entertaining than a movie in my opinion. According to my doctor, I am normal and doing well. Of course, I feel like a waddling and clumsy cow, but if she says I'm normal then I will make myself believe her!

Last month, I made the first pregnancy files post. Now, it's time for an update. Soooooo, here we go!
  • I dropped. YAY! The good news? I can breathe. The bad news? I can't walk *imeanwaddle* comfortably.
  • Along with dropping, I am also 1 cm (maybe 2) dilated. Hooray!
  • Baby Nathan's head is directly above my cervix, which made my doctor very happy...which in turn makes ME very happy too.
  • I am having major pelvic discomfort. I appreciate the fact that the kid is low and getting ready to make his debut, but the pain of walking isn't all that fun. However, as my doc says, "No pain, no gain." If the gain is a cuddly bundle of snips, snails, and puppy dog tails, then I'll take the pain.
  • Swelling came to visit a month ago. I had to resize my wedding ring but have been wearing it less due to occasional super swelling. And my feet and ankles? omygoodness! Because of this, I have been trying to take in as much water as possible, but I have to say, "miss Swelling" has largely overstayed her welcome.
  • Sleeping is becoming an adventure at night. I either can't get comfortable or my mind starts racing 110 miles per hour thinking of everything under the sun: Cleaning the house, labor pains, my water breaking in public, actually holding him in my arms, coming home and becoming a family, bottles, baby burp cloths, diapers....schooling....graduation...wedding. You name it, my mind will hit at night.
  • My belly button popped. I'm actually glad it did. In my opinion, if my tummy is going to stretch to the max, I might as well get some entertainment out of it. And a popped belly button? That's super intriguing and entertaining to me.
There you have it! I have to say, pregnancy is quite an adventure.

My Baby Boy Belly Bump

Go ahead and say that title real fast a few times. Have a little laugh on this early Friday evening!

So, as the title says, HERE is my baby boy belly bump for week 36!

So that is about 5 1/2 pounds of adorable boy cuteness and......20 pounds of......red grapes, chicken, grapefruit, pinto beans, ice cream, water.....and who knows what else.

36 weeks. Whew! One more week and baby Lee will no longer be considered premature if he decides to come early. So, how am I feeling? TIRED. I still have bouts of crazy energy where I do tons of stuff and clean EVERYTHING, but then....I crash. According to the fantastic pregnancy book: What To Expect When You're Expecting, here are some common "symptoms" of month 9 (which is 36-40 weeks):

* Changes in baby's activity (more squirming and less kicking) - Check. I'm feeling TONS of movement but no "pounding" like I did a month or two ago.

* Heartburn - Heartburn is at a minimum which, I personally attribute to drinking lots of ionized water and not eating late at night.

* Occasional headaches, faintness, dizziness - Yup. Headaches? Eh....that has been the thorn in my side for the past week but, thankfully, I have upped on more sunshine, less reading, and plenty of rest. So it's better. Faintness and dizziness is occasional. Usually when I get up quick or early in the morning or late at night when I get out of bed.

* Sensitive gums - Mmm...a little.

* Leg cramps - Wooo....there for a month or so, I was having them often. Thanks to some awesome exercise stretches that I do constantly, I am not having leg cramps anymore. Yay!

* Increased backache and heaviness - Youuuuu betcha. I have always had bad posture when I sit, so I've been trying to keep my back straight ALL the time instead of just when I'm standing or walking. It's helped and my back doesn't hurt quite so often. However, with the baby boy growing and pushing me forward, it does get difficult...and heaviness? Um, yeah. lol

* Increased swelling of ankles and feet - I have noticed that I swell only when I'm on my feet a lot. If I take breaks, it's better. If I'm on my feet for an insane amount of time, get ready...

* Itchy abdomen - Goodness, yes! And like I blogged in a recent post, it's mainly when I'm outside of the house in...front...of...people. Weird.

* Easier breathing after the baby drops - Not....*takes a breath*....not quite yet.

So....there's an update. In other news, I finally finished washing all the baby's stuff that I have so far. All the blankets, sheets, clothes, socks, cloth diapers, burp rags....you name it! The crib is made and ready and so is the little cradle in our bedroom. Want a sneak peak? Look below!

Sooooo cute! Whew! 36 weeks down and.....maybe 4 more to go?

A Day of Nesting

You know those days when you wake up and instantly want to go back to sleep? I have been having a lot of those lately. I suppose it's only normal. I mean, I have 20+ pounds on me that I have acquired over the last 8 months. That can make you drag a bit. I have a 5 pound boy in my womb...and that's bound to suck some energy out of your daily life. hehehe.

But today, WOW!! It was not one of those days. Maybe it was just a "nesting" urge....maybe it was the fact that I slept like a baby from 9:45 last night to 7 a.m. this morning. Who knows?! Regardless, today I have accomplished quite a lot.

* Bedroom cleaned. Check.

* Medicine cabinet rearranged and moved (Grant's been after me to do this for weeks). Check.

* Baby bath stuff in the previous medicine cabinet. Check.

* Laundry from last Friday to yesterday done. Check.

* An army of ants destroyed (took me forever, but I concocted a killer-paste that got 'er done!). Check.

* My dresser cleaned out and organized. Check.

I also started washing the baby's clothes and blankets, so that's a good step in the right direction. I am super proud of myself.....although I have a feeling that tomorrow I will be taking it easy and relaxing. But, hey, when you're in the mood and have the energy, especially if you're pregnant, I say, "take FULL advantage of it!" Right, ladies?

The Pregnancy Files

So this morning, my husband's alarm goes off and we plunge into our morning-at-home routine:

He presses snooze. I drift back to sleep. Alarm goes off again and he presses snooze. Again, I happily snuggle with my pillow. Minutes later, the most "absolutely annoying alarm ever" goes off again and he gets up. I stay in bed and enjoy the fact that I don't have to worry about the stupid alarm anymore. He comes back in the bedroom. I wake up. We chat as he gets ready for work. He kisses me goodbye. I yawn and stretch, then decide to get up since I'm awake anyway.

That has become our routine and today was no different....except for the WHAM! moment I had as we chatted. I suddenly sat up in bed and said, "Grant.....I just realized I'm having this baby next month!" -- Cue "extremely-excited-yet-overwhelmingly-shocked feeling."

Next month. Finally. After 8 months of pregnancy, I am almost there.

A few people have asked me how pregnancy is going, how I'm feeling, what I'm experiencing, and the like, so here are a few info-facts on how things are going as of late:

* I...am....tired. I have moments when I can literally clean everything and move stuff and work from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. easily. THEN there are those days, which are becoming more and more frequent, when a single trip from one room to the other makes me want to lie down.

* My skin itches. Of course, it never itches when I'm at home or really up to nothing important. No. My skin decides to drive me crazy with an inch when I'm in public or when I am alllllllmost to dreamland. I have come to the conclusion that my skin hates people and sleep. :p

* I cannot bend over. Period. I have to bend my legs sideways and ease down into a squat. Not lady-like AT ALL.

* My belly button....is.....gross.

* I have recently been forced to say "Hello" to swelling. Oh joy.... To combat this, I have been trying to drown myself in water since, oddly enough, the more water you drink, the less you swell. Go figure.

* Headaches. Enough said.

* My appetite has shrunk. This makes Kristen very happy. It feels good to eat a meal and not be hungry again an hour later. I am beginning to have to remind myself to grab an apple or nibble on something every couple of hours because I could easily go all day on just one meal. So since I don't want to starve the 4 1/2 pound bundle inside me, I eat.

* Sleeping through the night, with no wake-up calls, hasn't happened in....five months?....six months? I can't remember.

* I am already completely in love with my baby boy.....but there are moments when the little squirt wiggles his way into my rib cage like he's playing hide-and-seek (though he has NO ONE to play that game with in my womb). Funny? Oh very. Comfortable? Not one bit.

* Nathan has finally reached the appropriate weight and length to make my tummy roll. I can't decide if this is more funny than gross.....or more gross than funny.

* As each day goes by and I get closer and closer to my due date, I become more and more aware of the great responsibility and honor that God has given me. Am I nervous? Y.E.S.  Do I get scared? Sometimes. Am I excited, anxious, and ready to hold this baby and teach him about his Creator? YOU BETCHA!

They Are Precious in His Sight

Yesterday, I had the joy of my life as I saw my baby boy - in color! Wow! Talk about an amazing experience! We watched for about 15 minutes as Nathan, (who was trying to sleep, poor thing), kicked and jerked and hid his face from us. After rolling MYSELF around and poking my own stomach, he finally moved his hands and we saw his little face - a mirror of Grant, in my opinion. We spent 45 minutes in awe of what God has done. To think that He took a portion of me and a portion of my husband and created a new life, and then placed that life inside my womb. How can anyone not believe in such a BIG, awesome, mighty, and powerful God?!

Nathan is currently 4 lbs and 11 ounces and 17 inches long. In the words of the sweet lady who did our ultrasound, "He is perfect." Not a hint of any problem. He will most likely be born weighing 7-8 lbs and around 19-20 inches long.

What to see our little man?  *big smile*

Psalm 71:6
"By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee."

Psalm 127:3
"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward."

Psalm 139:13
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb."

Isaiah 44:24
"Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself."
